100_4807_banana_treeBanana grow on tall stalks that look much like palm trees. People in nearly every land like bananas. They grow on tall plants that are often called trees. They are not real trees because they do not have a woody trunk like a tree. Instead, the stalk is made up of long leaves wrapped tightly together in a long, stiff bundle.

As each new leaf appears, the banana plant grows taller. A banana plant may grow to be nearly 30 feet tall. At the top of the plant is a large fan of green leaves, making it look somewhat like a palm tree. When the banana plant is fully grown, a large cluster of flower buds grows from a stem at the top.

Some of these flowers turn into tiny green bananas. As the bananas grow bigger and heavier, the stalk bends downward. Only one bunch of bananas grows on each banana plant. Bananas are cut while still green, and ripen on the way to market.

A plant produces only one bunch of bananas in its lifetime. After the bananas are picked, the plant dies. Growers start new plants by cutting away the old plant. As new plant will grow from the old roots. –Jonny Wonder
